Ranging from light-hearted to wrenching, all are poignant inside looks at naval operations rarely seen by outsiders. Topics include the real story behind the shuttle Challenger tragedy, risking his own life underwater, discovering a Soviet spy living across the street, surviving when a DELTA Rocket engine ignites, critical missions, and the everyday lives of men and women of the fleet. Dive into Sŭbmarine-ër for hijinks and breathtaking adventure with this poignant memoir by a true American hero.
The book was written by Jerry Pait and edited and compiled by Robert G. Williscroft.
After thirty years in the Navy, Jerry Pait—who calls himself “a brutally honest person”—tells it all. I’ve never read an autobiography quite like this, one that lets us feel what it is really like to serve as an enlisted man and officer in the Navy. At times adventurous and humorous, the author describes how he physically risked his life underwater and also discovered that a Soviet spy had moved right across the street from him. Want to know what caused the tragic explosion of the Challenger in 1986? Lieutenant Commander Pait reveals this as well as how it felt to almost die when an engine ignited. On occasion, he will even turn playful and pull the reader’s leg. Sŭbmarine-ër is an inspiring, heart-warming, and heart-wrenching memoir by an authentic American hero.
SŬBMARINE-ËR, Lt. Cmdr. Jerry Pait's semi-autobiographical history of his thirty years in and around the U.S. Navy’s submarine fleet, shows us a side of naval operations rarely seen by outsiders, or indeed even many insiders. His highly entertaining anecdotal style kept me reading through his tales of events whether light-hearted or tragic (and there are both here). I highly recommend this book to anyone with even a passing interest in the subject matter, it’s a great read!
SŬBMARINE-ËR is so interesting and brings back so many memories, I hate to put it down. At one time while I was in, there were five of us from Hamlet and Rockingham in the submarine service. The book looks great and I am so proud of you.
Cold war veterans will love this exciting submarine adventure! Dr. Williscroft brings readers along for a thrilling odyssey in which engaging characters experience the danger, passion and complexity of the underwater warrior’s world!
An exciting look into Cold War submarine espionage...I was completely riveted to the book’s suspense and action...amazingly based on true events. It was incredible to read about isolated, underwater hand-to-hand battles that took place in secret during the Cold War... Highly recommend!
Wow, what a life. You are one of the strongest men that I have ever met.
I had many occurrences to work with you during my years at the Cape beginning as one of only two First-Class Missile Technicians at NOTU and eventually retiring as the Documentation Engineering Manager at Lockheed with twenty-two of my total of thirty-four years (NOTU, VITRO, SP205 and Lockheed). Never once did I ever hear anyone say a discouraging word about you. In fact, just the opposite. You were an officer and a gentleman—as well as a true professional. It was an absolute pleasure to know and work with you. I might also add, those individuals I know whom you mentioned in SŬBMARINE-ËR were just as you described them.
Really enjoy your stories in SŬBMARINE-ËR. A different perspective.
